Amalia Sakinah Auliyani was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia. She studied at Bandung Institute of Technology majored in Ceramic Design. She is currently working in Ganara Art as a pottery teacher. On her perspective, clay is the perfect medium to express herself because working with clay demands the handmade and touch is most important aspect for her practice.
She also gives herself a work at Ceramica Studio, a handcrafted ceramic studio established in 2016, focused on tableware and homeware ceramics product. Their product uses natural and modern color. The color represents young people with a taste of sharp things, particular about function and design, also the people who aim comfort in their daily life.
Alongside with her friend Denissa, together they fuse both crochet and pottery into a single object. An interior designer in the making, Denissa Darmawan majored in interior design at Bandung Institute of Technology in 2016, she is now working as junior designer in small interior consultant in Jakarta. She was first introduced into the soothing world of crochet by seeing her mother crocheted when Denissa was still in high school. She then began to explore and self taught herself through stitches and yarns with the help of her mother. Crochet is the escape of her daily routine since high school. Whenever she feels overwhelmed in negative energy, balls of yarn, hooks, and stitched are her personal remedy.
Apart from their working life. Denissa has a strong admiration for Frida Kahlo and Van Gogh’s dedication to their works and for their prodigious ability to be very connected to their emotional parts as well as Gary Lightbody, a vocalist and songwriter from Snow Patrol. Denissa admires him on how is able to see things and translate them into such poetic photographs and writings.
On the other hand, Amalia had experience such unforgettable intern with pak Haryo from Keramik Puspa Lima. he inspired her on how to trust herself in the process of making art. She learned how to just fearlessly do it and not be afraid of creating something. Amalia also believes in the power of accepting your failure and just try again, it constantly keep her to move forward.
“pursue what you are truly passionate with and no matter what your interests are, they are valid. Do not be afraid to be different and to stand out. I may not have enough spotlight, as I still am trying to figure out which path should I set. But I do wish them to see that point. Just start and take your time to explore, try to absorb anything that you encounter. Cause what can really inspire you, might be something that is already in front you and most importantly I wish I could tell everyone that they have so much more potential as a human being.”
