Adonara is a small island to the west of Larantuka, Flores. Most of the people living on this island are women as the men have gone to Malaysia to work. Textiles are an important aspect of ceremonial life and are still used as part of the gift exchange for marriage. This pillow is made up of the traditional cloth woven on Adonara, using handspun threads and natural dyes. The colored black panel of this pillow is made from high quality raw Thai silk and is dyed with natural dyes by Esme Living Colours. Threads of Life works with weavers who still have the ability to make traditional textiles using natural dyes to generate income and to maintain the traditional weaving and dying practicises that are so integrail to the rich cultures.
